Layoffs have hit one of video games’ biggest developers. According to multiple, now former, employees on LinkedIn, NBA 2K and WWE 2K developer Visual Concepts has laid off an unknown number of employees.
On Wednesday, posts began regarding the layoffs. Brittany Thibodeaux, a software engineer, indicated that “many” people were let go in this round of cuts, including her.
That was followed up by more people taking to the platform to announce that they’ve been let go.
“After three years and some change, my time at VC is at a close,” game designer Anna Hodges said. “I’m so grateful to all of the extremely talented, and dedicated people I’ve had the opportunity to work with.”
One employee said they were let go on a day they were out of work due to an autoimmune disease.
“Last week, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that will shorten my lifespan. Today, while on a sick day because of said autoimmune disorder, I was laid off,” game designer Nina Marotta wrote. “This is the second time in my short career that I’ve gone through this, and I am genuinely in agony both physically and mentally. Today, instead of resting my body, I am up shaking and sobbing and trying to wrap my head about what just happened.”
Based on the timing, the layoffs took place on Wednesday. On Thursday, Take-Two stock gained another $2 billion in value due to rumors surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6. As far as Visual Concepts is concerned, their latest main games, WWE 2K26 and NBA 2K26, remain two of the best-selling games each month.
Insider Gaming has reached out to 2K and Take-Two Interactive for clarification on the scale of the layoffs. As of publishing, however, neither party has responded to those requests.
