DMZ returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and there are a lot of questions about the game mode, and plenty of answers to give. DMZ is a unique experience, and unlike anything you’ll experience in either the campaign or online multiplayer.
There’s no Zombies in MW4 this year, nor a wave-based survival mode of any kind. The onus for a third mode falls on the shoulders of DMZ, which is the first time we’ve seen it since MWZ in Call of Duty‘s Modern Warfare 3. If you’re unfamiliar with DMZ, read on for complete guidance.
Is DMZ Free in Modern Warfare 4?
DMZ is not a free game mode in the Modern Warfare 4 release cycle, and it’s one part of the overall paid MW4 package.
This isn’t like Warzone, which is free-to-play. Like Zombies or any other extra game modes, you get to play DMZ if you’ve bought Modern Warfare 4. Previous Call of Duty DMZ experiences have also been paid, and it’s unlikely Activision will make DMZ free at any point.

What is DMZ in MW4?
An extraction shooter is essentially what DMZ is: You drop into the map, complete objectives, find new loot, and attempt to exit the map, all without being killed.
The extraction shooter market has become hugely popular in the last few years. Escape From Tarkov has really paved the way for this exciting new way of playing shooters.

Since then, Gray Zone Warfare has become a solid addition, and ARC Raiders has given the extraction shooter a mainstream edge.
What Does DMZ Stand For in MW4?
DMZ stands for Demilitarized Zone.
Here’s a quick definition I’ve found for a DMZ: ‘An area of land from which countries or groups have agreed to remove military forces.’ There are many real DMZs in real life, where you’re not allowed an army or to engage in combat.
However, they make a great setting for video games, serving as an illegal hunting ground you’re not supposed to be in!
Is MW4 DMZ PvP?
Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ has PvP, which means you’ll be facing real players in a match.
Scared of the thought of encountering human enemies as you’re running around, scavenging, and completing objectives? MW4’s DMZ features intense PvP, and even in the early days of the mode, most players are very hostile.
Is MW4 DMZ PvE?
Yes, there is also PvE in MW4’s DMZ, which means AI soldiers are present throughout the map.
In short, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is what’s known as PvPvE. Every game will feature an assortment of human and AI enemies. A completely hybrid world where pretty much every other character you run into will attempt to kill you—sounds fun, right?
