Microsoft has announced that its next major showcase will take place on June 9. It also announced a special deep-dive for the “next installment of a beloved franchise“. While it’s all but guaranteed to be Call of Duty, the question is whether the game is Call of Duty Black Ops 5 or something different.
The image teaser features redacted text over what appears to be a logo. A closer look, however, seems to show the Black Ops 5 logo, stylized as Black Ops V.
Is The New Game Call of Duty: Black Ops 5?
While it could very well be Black Ops 5, it’s worth noting that the next game will be the sixth in the Black Ops line of Call of Duty games. The last was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the only one in the line to not use a number. That game was released in 2020, and was the first in the series on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
As previously reported by Insider Gaming, Call of Duty: Black Ops 5, if that’s what it’s called, will be based on the Gulf War. The next game will also feature a more open-world campaign, and has been built entirely from the ground up.
“Currently, the game’s open world will see the player and their squad navigate the map more akin to that of Far Cry than anything we’ve seen before in the Call of Duty universe,” Insider Gaming reported back in February. “Players will be able to utilize vehicles to get around, as well as using a fast travel system to get from one point to the next.”
As for the official name, we’ll have to wait and see until the game’s official reveal in June at the Xbox Summer Showcase.
