With the original ‘Project Americas’ plan, GTA 6 was going to feature large swaths of land from both North and South America.
New development insights about GTA 6 have come to light following a new Bloomberg interview with Rockstar. Players have learned about the development team’s views on the initial leaks, including the establishment of a Los Angeles studio dedicated solely to NPC creation. We also learned about the original plans for GTA 6.
GTA 6 Was Codenamed ‘Project Americas’ Due to the Plans for North and South America
A new Bloomberg report revealed that Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar, visited Miami in 2015 with a team on a research trip. At the time, the plans for the game were quite ambitious, operating under the code name ‘Project Americas,’ as Rockstar intended to feature large areas from both North and South America in GTA 6. However, the scope was eventually scaled back to focus solely on Miami and its surrounding areas. Despite this, Leonida remains Rockstar’s biggest map to date.
There were other things that had to be changed too; GTA 6 was being developed alongside Red Dead Redemption 2, but that had to be stopped as RDR2 needed more resources and attention. The decision led to GTA 6 being delayed by several years and Rockstar focusing mainly on only one game at the time. At the same time, Nelson felt that the benefit would be the “payoff when we get to the game.”
