Rockstar Games is known for creating detailed animal ecosystems, with Red Dead Redemption 2 in particular earning praise for its huge variety of wildlife and lifelike behaviour. It looks like the studio is taking things even further with Grand Theft Auto 6, which will feature more than 170 different animal species across Leonida.
The roster includes several animals that have never appeared in a Rockstar game before, including manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and alligators, giving players plenty of wildlife to discover when they eventually get their hands on the game.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Has Incredibly Diverse Animal Roster
The details come from Game Informer, which has revealed several new details about the wildlife inhabiting GTA 6’s version of Florida.
More than 170 animal species can be found across Leonida, including over 60 different types of birds and more than 30 land mammals. The ecosystem will also feature a wide variety of fish, reptiles, and other creatures, with different species appearing across the game’s many environments.
Rockstar’s Vice President of Dynamic Art, Michael Kane, explained that the team wanted to accurately recreate Florida’s diverse ecosystem across Leonida’s different biomes.

That includes everything from urban and rural environments to inland waterways, the ocean, swamps, and the Everglades-inspired wetlands.
“The animal art and population teams are incredibly passionate about delivering animals that are accurately researched and look visually correct in every respect,” Kane said, adding that the team is also focused on supporting “movement and animation to bring them to life.”
The huge wildlife roster is just one of the ways Rockstar is attempting to make GTA 6 feel like one of its most lifelike worlds yet. Leonida will also feature a dynamic weather system with hurricanes and thunderstorms, while Rockstar has previously described the game’s map as the biggest it has created to date.
