XBOX Addresses GTA 6 ‘Misreporting’ About Cloud Gaming and PC Access

Yesterday, news dropped regarding a claimed ‘exclusive cloud streaming deal’ that XBOX had managed to secure with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. It was stated that, at launch, users would be able to sign up for XBOX Game Pass, get access to the platform’s cloud streaming service, and effectively stream GTA 6 on any eligible device, including PC platforms.

Hours later, XBOX’s CSO, Matthew Ball, took to social media to poo-poo on that report, which had by then circulated like wildfire online. Unfortunately, his response was pretty ambiguous and led to further confusion, so I’m taking this opportunity to hopefully clear things up a bit.

XBOX CSO Shuts Down GTA 6 Streaming Claim

Recently, you might have seen a report that emerged first from The Verge, which claimed that XBOX and Rockstar had inked a deal for ‘GTA 6 streaming rights’. This surfaced after XBOX CEO Asha Sharma spoke to her staff base and stated that they’re doing something with GTA 6 that ‘no other platform holder is doing.’

That was later ‘revealed’ as being a cloud streaming deal, which is the very bout of misreporting that CSO Matthew Ball shut down within a matter of hours.

He wrote on social media:

While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.

But this statement itself is confusing, as it could be misconstrued.

For instance, it says ‘not streaming exclusively’, rather than ‘not streaming’, which suggests it might be available on the XBOX Cloud Gaming service but also on other platforms, like NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW. That’s the crux of the statement that many users across social media have found an issue with.

This story was jumped on so strongly because, if true, it would have meant that XBOX was effectively enabling PC players to play GTA 6 when the game launches on November 19th. For now, there’s absolutely no indication of when GTA 6 will launch on PC. We can safely assume it will, but it might be a year before it happens.
