Paramount & WBD’s Game Divisions To Merge Under Skydance

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery’s game divisions are set to merge under Skydance, bringing some of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world under a single gaming operation.

The move follows Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with Tony Driscoll set to lead the newly combined games and experiences division as President of Games and Experiences.

Warner Bros. Games & Paramount Games Will Combine

The news was detailed by Variety, which revealed that the new division will bring together Warner Bros. Games and Paramount’s recently established Paramount Games Studio, giving Skydance control over an enormous portfolio of gaming IP and development talent.

Warner Bros. Games currently oversees studios including Rocksteady, NetherRealm, Avalanche Software, TT Games and WB Games Montreal, with franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Comics and Game of Thrones under its umbrella.

Paramount, meanwhile, has been building its own gaming operation around franchises including Star Trek, SpongeBob SquarePants, South Park and Avatar.

Driscoll, who previously led Paramount’s games division, will now oversee the combined operation as Skydance looks to make games and interactive experiences a larger part of its overall entertainment strategy. The early plans for his team were detailed in his memo:

We immerse our guests in theme parks, resorts, restaurants, retail, studio tours and more. We immerse our players in action, adventure, combat, competition and creativity, from ‘Batman’ to ‘SpongeBob. And no matter your role on this team, you are a creator, builder, operator, and steward of those worlds.

We have the opportunity to create amazing spaces where friendships are formed and communities grow. That is only possible because of your hard work and talent. Whether it’s on Zoom or in person, my first priority in the coming weeks is meeting as many of you as I can from LA to London, Montreal to Tokyo, and beyond.

Exactly how Skydance plans to utilise that portfolio remains to be seen, but the combination of Warner Bros. Games’ established studios and Paramount’s extensive collection of franchises could lead to some interesting projects in the years ahead.
