Sony has filed a patent that would use a player’s game data to train NPCs and bosses, called ‘AI-adapted non-player character for video game system.’
The PlayStation creators have filed a wealth of patents recently, and while not all of them will come to fruition, Sony is clearly moving quickly to protect its ideas as the clock ticks towards the next era of gaming and PlayStation 6.
Sony Patents AI Technology For NPC Training
As reported by IGN, the patent describes the process of taking data generated from players in the game, and then using it to modify NPCs to make them more lifelike.
In theory, this would allow for the creation of more realistic characters, and, perhaps crucially, enhance boss fights to be more menacing and challenging.
The process would make development of NPCs easier and quicker, but, crucially, the enhancement it may offer gamers could be the main appeal.
For example, imagine a situation where a boss you are fighting against has been studying your character in the background, and knows your strengths and weaknesses.
This would make every battle more unique and provide less of a clear-cut way to secure victory, and would be a particularly challenging addition in Soulslike games.
Naturally, there will be some concerns about the use of player data, and it would have to be predominantly connected to your actions in game in order to prevent the risk of leaks of more sensitive personal data.
It remains to be seen whether Sony pushes ahead with this idea and brings it into their game development, or if the proposal will be shelved later down the line.
