Amazon has provided an update on the future of James Bond video games.
James Bond video games are back in the spotlight with the recent release of 007: First Light. The game was reviewed very positively, and IO Interactive, known for its work on the Hitman series, seemingly did a great job bringing the suave superspy to life. However, new comments from the GM of Amazon Gaming suggest they will take a much more hands-on approach to the next James Bond video game experience.
Amazon Discusses Future of James Bond Games After 007: First Light
Speaking with Polygon, Jeff Gatis noted that they did not have full rights to First Light, as the deal with IO Interactive was made before Amazon acquired the James Bond IP. Furthermore, it’s noted that any future projects will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”
“We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP,” Gattis explains, “but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”
Additionally, Amazon is working on plenty of Prime Video series based around video games. God of War, Tomb Raider, and more have projects in the works at Amazon outside of video games. This is part of the company’s strategy to fully capitalize on the IP they own and desire to expand the possibilities beyond video games.
“We think that’s a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends — or kind of expands upon — TV shows and movies. So there’ll be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that’ll go alongside the games. There’s a lot of things we have in the works on new games that’ll relate to Prime Video IP.”
