PlayerUnknown Productions Ends Development On Go Wayback, Holds Layoffs

PlayerUnknown Productions has announced some unfortunate news in early June 2026.

On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, PlayerUnknown announced on social media that they had made the difficult decision to halt further development on Prologue: Go Wayback! Additionally, it was announced that the team will restructure and move forward with a smaller staff.

“Unfortunately, I have reached the limits of how far I can continue to fund this journey in its current form. As a result, I have made the hard decision to restructure the studio. We will continue developing our Melba technology with a smaller team, while halting further development of Go Wayback,” Brendan Greene said in a statement.

As a giveback to those who have supported the project thus far, Greene also announced plans to make the game available for free to future players in a future update. He’s also exploring how to offer refunds to those who purchase the game on Steam and the Epic Games Store. More details will come in the future. He thanked those who have supported the project so far, but also admitted that his immediate priority is to support the affected employees during their transition. It has not been stated how many team members were cut.

Unfortunately, this continues the trend of layoffs that have hit the games industry in 2026. Earlier in the year, Epic Games laid off more than 1,000 individuals. Learn more about that here.
