Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently reacted to data shared by Sony showing that consumers are trending toward digital game purchases. While he sees the data, he would also prefer that physical media be available.
The comments were made in a tweet in response to data showing that digital downloads accounted for 82% of game sales in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending in 2026. He also remarked that when he was still working in the business, digital downloads surpassed 50%, a major milestone. He also called upon those in control to begin delivering on the promise of trust and transparency across all digital media.

Sony Comments on Physical Media Backlash Ahead of Player Protest

Sony recently announced that it would end production of physical game media in 2028. In response to this, some disgruntled PlayStation users are organizing a sort of blackout later in August.
