PlayStation Confirms Support for Existing Physical Games Post 2028

In a new announcement, PlayStation has stated that publishers can still get existing physical media printed after January 2028.

This is the latest development in the recent announcement that has taken over the entire internet: Sony ceasing production of physical titles after January 2028. The new information might provide some respite for players, as they will have time to grab discs of existing games.

PlayStation Informs Partners That Pre-2028 Games Will Still Be Able to Get Discs Re-Printed

According to a new Game File report, Sony sent a partner message to game publishers stating that they will “still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.” PlayStation has clearly informed partners that any game released before the deadline will be able to have its discs printed. However, PlayStation did say that one thing will change: the “ordering process for the discs,” which will be announced later.

Regarding what happens after the deadline, Sony stated that publishers will have the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes. So players now know they will be able to grab discs of games released in 2027 in 2028; however, we don’t know how these games will be offered later: will it be a code, embedded in a card, or something else? Players will have to wait for an announcement to know for sure.

  • This isn’t very assuring for those like myself who still buy physical games. If in 2028 publishers can still make physical copies of games released before 2028, Sony should still support physical discs for PS5 and PS4 anyways, even if PS6 will be digital only.

Then yet again, there’s still the possibility that even physical 2026/2027 games made in 2028 could be empty boxes with download codes in them. Still not very reassuring, imo

  • They can F off. PS5 is officially the last Sony console. And if they stop making disk they should drop the price for video games.

  • Também, ia de ps6 mas o ps5 foi meu ultimo console da sony. Espero que o Projeto helix venha forte, ou vou voltar para o desktop. Hoe ja conseguimos fazer um bom mini pc portatil mais interessante que console de mesa.

  • Well when that happens with no more discs I will cease to buy Sony/playstation products. I have no access to internet where I live. I have tried cable company, telephone home internet. None of it is available in my location

  • If x-box continue to offer physical discs past this date, you can be certain most consumers will jump ship.

  • Good riddance to physical. I hope the physical fan bays keep their promise and stay off the the PS6 line when it comes out. The dawn of a new era is beginning and I will always support Sony.

    • Always the ones with the privilege of decent internet that act toxic towards people who are not able to get it, is the fact people actually like being able to keep their game collections for more than a few years, such a bad thing? Digital is so flimsy and impermanent it degrades it rots one day you’re entire playlist of games is going to be gone bro and it’s going to be against your wishes then we’ll see how much digital is better.

  • I disagree with the “good riddance” statement. Digital licenses can be revoked by Sony and they already started recently with movies on Sony Core. A lot people reported that they had purchased movies from Sony Core and Sony removed them from their libraries without even so much as offering refunds. If they start doing that with games on the PS6 or even PS4/PS5, we’re gonna wish we had the physical discs. It’s an absolute scam and should 100% be illegal.

  • If no more dics I will swith to x box they not going to make me join the membership to keep my game if you stop your membership you will loose everything you buy unless you keep your membership for life
That is why I like dics is my to keep
I can resell it if I like with digital your can not
