‘Tarkov Meets Fallout’ MMO Faces Bankruptcy As Updates Stop and Reviews Plummet

In December 2025, an all-new MMO FPS game titled ‘PIONER‘ dropped into early access, exclusively on PC. In preview materials, many compared it to games like Escape from Tarkov, boasting some hardcore mechanics, a similar visual palette, and an undoubtedly Russian aesthetic and setting.

Upon release, it became more obvious that it was closer to something like STALKER or Fallout 76, but the Tarkov comparisons stuck, even if it wasn’t even in the same genre. Now, PIONER is struggling more than ever under the weight of bankruptcy orders, unpaid salaries, worsening reviews, and a lack of updates.

It looks like the writing might be on the wall, and I, for one, am extremely disappointed.

PIONER Faces Imminent Elimination

PIONER, from GFA Games, was never going to win any awards, but in my 2025 review of the early-access MMO FPS, I showered it with praise:

PIONER represents something special. It’s a refreshing, honest attempt to build something extremely ambitious in a world dominated by some immense entities. If GFA Games can iron out the kinks and keep on a steady course out of early access, this could be a hidden gem of the post-apocalyptic space.

That was all true. I stacked up the hours in PIONER and streamed it to thousands of people, singing the game’s positive points and eagerly following each new update.

Unfortunately, things turned awry in April 2026, when it was revealed after a lengthy investigation by a Russian publication that GFA Games was facing immense problems with unpaid salaries, geographical clashes, frozen bank accounts, and mounting debts. It looks as though the situation has worsened since then.

On May 29th, a court petition was filed in Moscow demanding that GFA Games, the studio behind PIONER, file for bankruptcy. This was submitted via the Federal Tax Service of Russia for the Kirov Region, but a brief glimpse reveals that no further action appears to have been taken, and the company seems to still be open for business.

Last year, PIONER underwent beta testing, and the feedback wasn’t bad. It filled players with hope of a new post-apocalyptic MMO entering the space, one with DNA that smacked of STALKER, Fallout, and Escape from Tarkov. The studio seemed ready and raring to go, and the game had a foundation stretching years in the past, so it all looked good.

PIONER is a fever dream with elements of STALKER, Tarkov, Fallout 76, and Metro

In January, I caught up with Aleksandr Nikitin, the studio’s founder and CEO, and I heard great things. We discussed why PIONER was only ever going to work as an MMO, rather than becoming a single-player post-apocalyptic shooter. Now, months later, it looks as though it’s never going to work at all.

Back in April, before things went fully south, GFA Games unveiled a roadmap for 2026, which included story expansions, overhauls to core mechanics, and new events. At the time of writing, the last major update was on May 2nd, which was woefully released to address problems introduced in an earlier patch.

The last post the team made on Steam’s news hub was a brief message about ‘an upcoming weapon’, the ‘Inferno’ rifle. That was on May 30th, and nothing else has surfaced since. On social media, the team has just posted a loop of messages regarding server restarts and maintenance windows, nothing of any substance.

Once upon a time, PIONER graced a space during E3, and in the run-up to it hitting early access, enjoyed ample coverage from top-tier outlets (like Insider Gaming) and grew a following, but now, things have soured immeasurably.

The most recent reviews are Mostly Negative on Steam, mostly due to serious technical issues, which seems strange, given how often the game goes offline for maintenance, as stated above.

If you venture to the PIONER website and try to head into the news section, you’re simply met with a 404 error, with the latest articles on the top page being from December 2025.

It’s a miserable situation all around, as I had high hopes for this game, even if it wasn’t breaking the bank when it came to player counts. The potential was there, so I stuck with it, and the time I spent in PIONER was generally enjoyable, which is what my review was all about.
