PlayStation 5 Console Sales Down 36% in Just One Year

PS5 sales are trending down in 2026, compared to 2025, with new figures from Sony PlayStation showing that people are starting to gravitate away from the PlayStation 5.

The FY2026 Q1 Earnings are in, and we’ve learned some cool bits, such as digital software still dominating physical media, which isn’t good news for those fighting to save the sanctity of the disc.

But new interest in the PS5 is definitely on the decline, and it could get worse.

PS5 Sales Hit Just 1.6 Million in FY2026 Q1

On July 31, 2026, Sony delivered its complete financials for FY2026 Q1.

The data ran through software, hardware, in particular, the state of PS5 console sales in the beginning stages of 2026, and how the figures stack up to 2025.

For Q1, we can see that 1.6 million PS5 units were sold. In comparison, FY2025 Q1 saw 2.5 million consoles sold, representing a 36% decrease in 12 months.

A myriad of reasons could have caused this: Most people have a PS5 already, it’s so late into the lifecycle that consumers are waiting for the PS6, and many more.

Q1 was before the PS5 price increases in 2026, which did come into effect for Q2.

So it will be interesting to see if sales went down further in Q2, especially as FY2025 Q2’s 4 million and Q3’s 7.9 million were solid numbers.

We likely won’t see if there has been a major reaction from the disc controversy until the Q3 numbers.
