EA Sports has renamed the FC Pro World Championship, the prestigious EA Sports FC esports trophy, after Diogo Jota.
The game publisher announced the tribute on the one-year anniversary of the former Liverpool and Portugal forward’s death following a car crash.
As well as being an elite footballer, Jota was also a keen gamer and fan of esports, owning his own team and competing in EA FC himself.
The best EA FC 26 players will compete in the $1.5m FC Pro Championships at the Esports World Cup, where the trophy will be lifted on July 26.

A statement from EA Sports revealed that they had permission from the late forward’s family.
“With his family’s blessing, the trophy has been renamed in recognition of Diogo’s love for EA SPORTS FC and his passion for esports – both as a competitor and as the founder of his own esports team.
“We will continue working with Diogo’s family to find meaningful ways to honour his legacy. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and admired him.”
Diogo Jota’s Connection to Esports
As mentioned previously, Jota formed his own esports team, Luna Esports, which still competes in EA FC.
And he himself would regularly compete in Weekend League and against other high-level players.
Jota infamously once had to quit a ranked FIFA match because he was going to be late for a Liverpool game.

It didn’t affect him though, as Jota proceeded to score twice in a 4-0 win over Southampton, with the first coming after just 97 seconds.
He proceeded in that game to do his iconic celebration, which saw him sit down and pretend to hold a console controller.
Also, Jota defeated Trent Alexander-Arnold and various other footballers to win the first-ever ePremier League Invitational tournament.
