The Death Stranding movie is not going to be a direct adaptation, but an original story.
Announced in 2022, a film adaptation of Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding was in the works. While information had been sparse for a few years, a director was revealed in April 2025. Michael Sarnoski, who did A Quiet Place: Day One, was tapped to helm the project for A24. The film isn’t planned to be a straight adaptation of the 2019 title, but will be within the game’s dystopian universe. At today’s Beyond the Strand presentation, we learned some new information on the film, including what we may expect.
Death Stranding Film Will Have Original Characters, Plot
In the video, seen above, we got some new information on A24’s Death Standing film. Michael Sarnoski talked about the project and joining it after A Quiet Place: Day One. He confirmed that the film will be an original story set within the game’s universe. There will be new characters and plotlines, though further details are under wraps.
While Death Stranding isn’t a film, it does have the makings for it. Not only did the visuals feel movie-like, but it boasted an all-star cast, led by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus. With actors like Spectre’s Lea Seydoux, Rogue One’s Mads Mikkelson, and The Last of Us’ Troy Baker, there was a lot of talent on display. The newest entry in the series, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, is already considered for year-end awards, releasing this past June. The film looks to take what fans loved about the games and make it come alive in a new format, so, needless to say, it’s one to watch.
