COD DMZ Has Been Named The ‘Action Extraction Shooter’

Infinity Ward has revealed a major deep dive into Modern Warfare 4’s upcoming extraction mode, DMZ, describing the experience as an “Action Extraction Shooter.”

The description suggests Infinity Ward is looking to carve out its own space within the increasingly popular extraction shooter genre. While games like Escape from Tarkov are known for their hardcore approach and ARC Raiders leans further into adventure, DMZ appears to be targeting a much more action-heavy experience.

Is DMZ Introducing A New Extraction Sub-Genre?

Infinity Ward has released a 15-minute video exploring the development of DMZ and what players can expect when the new Call of Duty experience arrives.

Extraction shooters are hardly a new concept, with the likes of Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders already establishing themselves as major players in the genre. However, Infinity Ward believes there’s still plenty of room to experiment, with DMZ attempting to put its own spin on the formula while potentially introducing extraction shooters to a much wider audience.

Speaking in the video, Infinity Ward’s Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot explained that players won’t spend their time simply looting and occasionally coming across an AI enemy or another player. Instead, DMZ is designed around a much more action-packed approach, hence the “Action Extraction Shooter” label.

A major part of that comes from the game’s AI, which features four different tiers alongside high-profile enemies such as Commanders and Lieutenants. Taking these enemies down can reward players with valuable loot, while the sheer number of other players, gear and loot scattered throughout the map should ensure there’s rarely a quiet moment.

It’s another example of Infinity Ward’s ambitions for DMZ, particularly as the studio has already described the mode as a “big swing” for Call of Duty. The fast-paced approach could be one of the key factors in helping DMZ appeal to a mainstream audience, while its differences from existing extraction shooters may also give genre veterans a reason to jump in.
