Supermassive Games Layoffs Arrive With Over 70 People Let Go

A new wave of layoffs has hit the gaming industry, with Supermassive Games reportedly letting go of more than 70 members of staff across a number of departments.

According to one member of staff, these layoffs include developers, artists, producers, and members of the studio’s senior leadership team, following a redundancy consultation announced earlier this year.

Job Cuts At Supermassive Games

Supermassive Games first announced the potential layoffs back in August, revealing that up to 75 positions could be made redundant as part of a consultation process.

It now appears that the process has reached its conclusion, with several former employees taking to social media to confirm that they have been let go.

Frank Tindle, Supermassive Games’ former IT and Facilities Director, shared the news on LinkedIn. Tindle revealed that he had been informed several weeks ago that his position was at risk before ultimately losing his job.

After spending 16 years at the studio, Tindle is among more than 70 employees reportedly affected by the latest cuts. Supermassive previously had more than 400 employees before the redundancies.

Supermassive Games has yet to comment on the seemingly complete layoffs. When the initial consultation was announced on August 11, however, the studio said:

We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company.

The studio added that it would prioritise supporting those affected throughout the process.

Unfortunately, Supermassive is far from the only studio facing cuts. Ninja Theory has also reportedly begun layoffs as the studio faces closure after XBOX shut it down.
