Beyond Good and Evil 2 Still in Early Pre-Production After Nearly 20 Years, It’s Claimed

The woes of Beyond Good and Evil fans are set to continue after a new report reveals that, yes, the game is still alive, in keeping with recent reports that development is still happening, but there’s still a long way to go.

In January 2026, Beyond Good & Evil 2’s director reaffirmed that the game is ‘Unaffected,’ and this was recently doubled down on by an Assassin’s Creed Shadows writer. This is good news, but on the other hand, this is a game that has been in development since 2008, holding the world record for the longest game in development, at 18 years and counting!

In a translated article from Origami, the article’s writer, Gauthier Andres, claimed they have learned more about BG&E2 ‘After talking to a number of people close to development.’

Insider Gaming can also verify a lot of what’s been said, and one of the most eye-catching and shocking statements concerns where the game’s development is:

‘This is the starting line. According to the nomenclature in force at Ubisoft and many other large companies in the sector, the production of BGE2 has not yet begun. It’s a pre-production that still involves, at least, 250 people (at Ubisoft Montpellier alone). And this project is now looking to go alpha. The “gate” he is pursuing is that of going into production.’

18 years later, and Beyond Good and Evil 2 is basically in, or about to start, pre-production! The report also states

‘It is impossible to be cancelled. To the point of becoming a kind of poison, according to several people inside: if the project is never cancelled, could it also never end?’

The general gist is that Ubisoft higher-ups and the creative forces within are constantly moving the goalposts on how they view the vision for BG&E2: ‘Is the game cool enough? Innovative? Can we make this loop more engaging? Wait, let’s push the deadline back again; we could improve the combat system… and so on.’

Some of the different pathways the development team was seeing the game between 2019-2022, for example, included BG&E2 being a ‘highly multiplayer and connected, with a multitude of planets, where players had to be able to match in a natural way.

Furthermore:

‘The objective is to offer a “solo first” adventure, without mandatory login and with strong story content that is also playable in co-op.’

Beyond Good and Evil 2’s direction seems all over the place, if its excessive development timeline didn’t already make this obvious. Beyond Good & Evil 2 survived Ubisoft’s project purge, and let’s hope the next major update on the sequel is a positive one.
