Baldur’s Gate 3’s publishing lead feels Nintendo’s new patents are “often used in bad faith”.
For those wondering, a new report has confirmed that Nintendo has acquired two patents in the United States. The first one is about ‘smooth switching between riding objects,’ but that’s not the main issue. The other is regarding summoning characters and allowing them to engage in combat against one another, which seems to be the primary concern.
Nintendo’s New Patent Could be Used in Bad Faith, According to Larian Publishing Director
Spotted by GamesRadar+, Larian Studios’ publishing director, Michael ‘Cromwelp’ Douse, has replied to a post regarding Nintendo’s new patent. In their latest post on X (formerly Twitter), Cromwelp has stated, “These types of patents are too often used in bad faith”. Many others have expressed similar concerns about the patent.
The patent question, U.S. Patent No. 12,403,397, has many players concerned about other games that might be using a similar system. The patent describes a character with the ability to summon a ‘sub-character’, which can engage in combat with another character in a virtual space upon receiving the correct inputs. Players are concerned that this patent will not just impact Palworld but also any other game that decides to feature a character-summoning combat system.
Furthermore, Nintendo faced no resistance when attempting to acquire the patent. The company applied for the patent in March 2023, was granted it in July 2025, and it was issued to the company last week.
In other news, a Nintendo Direct showcase is scheduled for September 12, 2025. Additionally, UFL’s CEO has stated Nintendo is holding Switch 2 dev kits from free-to-play developers.
