All Assassin’s Creed Games in Chronological Order—When Is AC Black Flag Resynced Set?

The history of the Assassin’s Creed franchise has gotten rather complicated in almost two decades since the first release, with the releases no longer following a direct chronological pattern.

Initially, in the early years of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed titles largely succeeded each other, but things have changed significantly since, replicating everything from Ancient Greece to London in the 1800s.

If you’ve got lost trying to keep track of everything and want all of the games listed in chronological order, Insider Gaming is here to help.

When is Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Set?

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is set between 1715 and 1722 AD, the same time period as the original release of the game.

Black Flag is focused on the Golden Age of Piracy in the West Indies, and, in terms of the chronological order, the main sequence of the game occurs quite late on in the Assassin’s Creed timeline. Only four Assassin’s Creed games are set later in history, though the timeline does get messy.

The ‘modern day’ sequences of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced take place after the events of Assassin’s Creed III, even though the main game is placed earlier in history.

No significant changes to the timeline are expected to take place with Assassin’s Creed Resynced, and it actually stands as the next game in chronological order after Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the most recent title released, though they’re separated by almost 200 years.

All Assassin’s Creed Games in Chronological Order

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – 431-422 BC

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the furthest back in the series’ history, chronologically, set around ancient Greece and the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta.

The game placed a lot of focus on historical mythology, rather than the conflict between the age-old battle between the Assassins and Templars, and continued in the vein of Origins by transitioning into an ARPG title.

Assassin’s Creed Origins – 49-44 BC

Assassin’s Creed Origins is set in Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra, and serves as the origin story to the establishment of the Assassin Brotherhood.

The title was a reinvention of the Assassin’s Creed formula, moving into an ARPG approach that has, over time, become controversial among many long-term fans of the franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage – 861-870 AD

Assassin’s Creed Mirage was initially planned as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, before being adapted into its own title, and is set in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age.

The game continues the ARPG approach from modern Assassin’s Creed titles, with players in control of Basim Ibn Ishaq, who is revealed to be the human reincarnation of Loki.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – 872-878 AD

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a direct successor to Odyssey, focusing on the Viking expansion into Britain, and places a large focus on Norse mythology.

The title places less focus upon the Assassin-Templar focus, instead expanding on the story of the Isu, and revealing many major characters are human reincarnations of Norse Gods.

Assassin’s Creed – 1191 AD

Prior to the release of the more modern ARPG-style games, the first Assassin’s Creed title stood as the first in chronological order. However, since the release of Origins in 2017, it has been preceded chronologically by several other titles.

The debut Assassin’s Creed title is set during the Third Crusade, in 1191 AD specifically, in the Holy Land region, including Jerusalem.

Assassin’s Creed II – 1476-1499 AD

Assassin’s Creed II, the second title released in the series, takes place during the height of the Renaissance in Italy, including cities like Florence and Venice.

The game features replications of many famous names from history, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Pope Alexander VI, and Lorenzo de’ Medici.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood – 1499-1507 AD

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood continued the story of fan-favourite Ezio and served as a direct sequel to Assassin’s Creed II, taking place during the Italian Wars.

Ezio is tasked with rebuilding the Assassin Brotherhood in Italy to aid the fight against the Templars, led by the Borgia family.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations – 1511-1512 AD

Assassin’s Creed Revelations follows on from the story established around Ezio in Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood, and continued the initial trend of Assassin’s Creed releases occurring in chronological order.

In Revelations, an aged Ezio heads to Constantinople, modern-day Turkey, and gets caught in the war of succession for the Ottoman throne.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows – 1579 AD

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the most recently released title in the series, is set in feudal Japan during an intense Civil War, and puts players in control of two characters.

The title backtracks on some of the more modern ARPG approaches for the franchise, with the two characters having different gameplay styles, allowing for a more modern and a more classic Assassin’s Creed approach.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag & Resynced – 1715-1722 AD

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Black Flag Resynced are set in the West Indies in the golden age of piracy, around 300 years before the modern day.

The naval combat offered in the title is significantly different to anything previously offered in other Assassin’s Creed games, though some similarities have been replicated in titles like Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue – 1752-1776 AD

Assassin’s Creed Rogue is set during the French and Indian War, and follows on from some of the approaches introduced in Black Flag, where it is preceded by just 30 years.

Rogue is somewhat of an anomaly in the series, with players taking control of Shay Patrick Cormac, who defects from the Assassins Brotherhood to join the Templars.

Assassin’s Creed III – 1754-1783 AD

Despite its name, Assassin’s Creed III was the fifth major instalment in the series and serves as a direct sequel to Revelations.

The title takes place in Colonial America, with players put in control of Connor fighting against the Templars, who are attempting to influence the outcome of the American Revolution.

Assassin’s Creed Unity – 1789-1794 AD

Assassin’s Creed Unity, like many other titles in the series, is set during a period of major internal conflict, with the main story set in Paris during the French Revolution.

The title introduced cooperative multiplayer to the series, but proved to be one of the least popular games of the franchise’s history.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 1868 AD

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the most recent title in the game chronologically, set in London during the Second Industrial Revolution, and also features some segments in 1916, during World War 1.

Released in 2015, no title has focused on a period of history more recent than Syndicate, and, in fact, many subsequent releases were set over 1000 years previously.
