Apple CEO Tim Cook Steps Down, John Ternus To Take Over

Apple is set to get a new CEO. On Monday afternoon, it was announced that CEO Tim Cook will be stepping down from his role later this year.

Cook will remain on as Apple CEO until September 1, 2026. As of that date, senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus will take over. Cook will then transition to being executive chairman on Apple’s board of directors.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said in a statement.

Cook, 65, has been with Apple since 1998, and its CEO since August 2011. He took over for Steve Jobs after previously serving as chief operating officer. During his time as CEO, Apple has launched products like the AirPods and Apple Watch. Apple’s market value has also grown under Cook from $350 billion to $4 trillion.

Starting September 1, Ternus will take over as Apple CEO. Ternus joined the company in 2001 as part of the product design team. He was promoted to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013, joining the executive team in 2021.

In the company announcement, Apple called Ternus “instrumental” in the design and launch of products like the iPad and AirPods, along with major updates to the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.

“John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor,” Cook said of his successor. “He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.”

Ternus says that he’s grateful for the opportunity to lead Apple after spending over two decades with the company.

“It has been a privilege to help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world and with one another,” he said. “I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come, and I am so happy to know that the most talented people on earth are here at Apple, determined to be part of something bigger than any one of us.”
