Just Cause Developer Avalanche Studios Working On New Open-World Game

When you think of peak modern-day open-world games, Just Cause 3 and 4 could try and blast their way into the conversation. They’re loud and brash, and they’re fun. Developer Avalanche Studios has spent a lot of time on the franchise, and a new job listing suggests either another sequel is coming or something else entirely.

Avalanche‘s work is solid. RAGE 2 was a commendable sequel, and not enough love is given to Mad Max, an open-world game based on the movie, which arrived at the right time. However, Just Cause is the company’s baby, and you might argue it peaked with Just Cause 3.

Maybe a fifth game could change that?

The Avalanche Studios job page (via CheatHappens) is advertising for a Senior Technical Designer.

Here’s the full job role description:

“As a Senior Technical Designer, you will play a vital role in the development of an unannounced AAA project. You will serve as a tech design generalist supporting the gameplay team, coordinating across disciplines, driving features forward where gaps exist, and ensuring that the gameplay features the team builds can be fully experienced in-game. Your hands-on expertise in game engine editors and scripting will be essential for creating gameplay experiences, building prefabs, and providing tools and setups that help the wider team excel.”

Crucially, the role requires “Scripting events, experiences, and systems in open-worlds.” I’ve checked the role up and down, and there’s no clear indication which franchise it could be about, or maybe it’s a straight-up new IP?

Previous evidence suggests it could be a new series or something other than Just Cause, because Avalanche’s founder said Just Cause 5 ‘would be a no-go.’

Also, this comes after last year’s rumor that Just Cause 5 was reportedly canceled mid-development.

Are you hoping it’s Just Cause 5? Or could Avalanche be working on a RAGE 3? Share your ideas and thoughts through the Insider Gaming Discord.

  • After layoffs and 2 cancellations Just Cause 5 and Contraband. I mean I don’t see how they continue. I do kind of wish they were given Generator Rex for a game, maybe Superman, and Jonah Hex. Rex cel shaded though.
