Dark Souls Lighting Engine has released a path tracing mode for DS2 in public beta.
FromSoftware originally released Dark Souls 2 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later released an enhanced version for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. However, since then, no updates have arrived, which means the vanilla versions of the game cannot take advantage of lighting features available on today’s machines. Now, thanks to modders, players can enjoy one of these features on PC.
Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod is Available Now
A post by the official Dark Souls Lighting Engine account on X (formerly Twitter) reveals that their Path Tracing mod has entered public beta. Interested users can try it out through their Discord until they are ready to upload it to Nexus Mods. The mod helps “hide texture tiling issues and also adds contrast from lighting, breaking up the monotony of surfaces.” Interested readers can check out a comparison video for the path tracing mod below:
For those unaware, Path Tracing is an advanced rendering technique often referred to as ‘full ray tracing.’ It uses an algorithm that simulates the true physics of light, which uses ray tracing as one component of a larger light simulation system. Interested readers can learn more about the technical aspects of this feature through Nvidia’s blog.
In other news, a new Bloodborne movie is in the works, and it has a famous content creator, Jacksepticeye, helping develop it. Additionally, Crimson Desert developers have revealed that they are discussing ideas for official mod support internally. What are your thoughts on the path tracing mode for Dark Souls 2?
