PGL has announced that the PGL Singapore Major 2026 will feature a third-place decider for the first time in Counter-Strike major history.
The announcement also included the VRS deadline for the invites. Teams will have to amass their VRS points prior to the November 2 deadline, which will dictate who gets the spots and who misses out.
PGL announces third-place decider in another Major shake-up
PGL has opted to have a third/fourth-place decider prior to the Singapore Major’s Grand Final, creating a final chance for teams to end their major on a positive note and earn some VRS points, which will help them into the next season.
The third-place team will presumably get a greater share of the $1,250,000 prize pool than the fourth-placed team, though prize money distribution is not yet known.
The announcement is the last in a series of innovations to the major format. Both the StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 and the upcoming IEM Cologne Major 2026 feature alterations to the previous formula.
StarLadder became the first CS major in history to feature a Best of 5 Grand Final, bringing Counter-Strike’s event in line with other top tournaments in the space.
The IEM Cologne Major 2026 will be the first major to remove Best of 1 series entirely. Bo1s have heavily featured at majors in the past, most recently utilized for non-elimination/promotion Swiss stages matches.
VRS deadline set for second major of the year
The November 2 VRS deadline will be the most significant aspect of PGL’s statement for rosters and organizations.
The relatively late deadline gives teams plenty of time to plan their calendars before the final push for VRS points.
Tournament organizers will also be eyeing the deadline as a prime opportunity to fit more events before the deadline. While Tier 1 tournaments have to announce dates well in advance, local LANs have more flexibility, allowing them to target dates.
The effect of local LANs on the VRS was never clearer than the race to secure IEM Cologne Major invites, where events such as DracuLan, Parken Challenger, and HLC Belgrade Pro were attended by Counter-Strike’s top teams as they sought major qualification.
The last Tier 1 tournament before the cutoff will be PGL Masters Bucharest from October 24-31, but history has shown that it may be at these smaller local LANs that the real drama really plays out.
