PGL Bucharest 2026 Heads to Playoffs: Who are the Contenders?

PGL Bucharest 2026 is moving into its playoff stage on Thursday, following the conclusion of a Swiss stage that saw Astralis and FUT continue their growth, but also saw the continued struggles of BC.Game and FaZe.

Teams such as Parivision, 3DMAX, The MongolZ, and Astralis will all be eyeing up the $400,000 first place prize money in a rare opportunity without Counter-Strike’s top dogs present.

PGL Bucharest prepares for playoffs with Astralis and FUT flying high

FUT and Astralis are undoubtedly the hot hands at the event after 3-0 finishes in the groups. Victories over Parivision and The MongolZ in the 2-0 matchups were reflective of two growing rosters.

After years of struggle, Astralis are increasingly growing a strong base for contention, with Jakob ‘jabbi’ Nygaard averaging a 1.40 HLTV rating so far, giving Astralis some star power.

FUT were at their explosive best as they outgunned Parivision in their qualification match, showing the roster’s innate potential, which is now being realized in Tier 1 competition.

Elsewhere, 3DMAX recovered from missing out on the Cologne Major with a 3-1 group record, equalling The MongolZ and MIBR’s run. After years away from Tier 1 CS, Kévin ‘misutaaa’ Rabier actually showed a great level in Bucharest as the team looked to rebuild.

The MongolZ seem amongst the contenders at the event despite the prolonged absence of their coach.

The roster’s synergy with Anarbileg ‘cobrazera’ Uuganbayar seems to be growing day by day, but their one-dimensionality can bite them without Erdenedalai ‘maaRaa’ Bayanbat there to add a touch of depth.

Despite their status as favourites before the event, Parivision barely snuck into the playoffs with a 3-2 record, playing out an incredibly close series against Wildcard, requiring quintuple overtime on Mirage. Overall, their level will have to sharpen up for the playoffs.

Eyeballers were the surprise package of the final Swiss Stage matches, defeating FOKUS to put Jesper ‘JW’ Wecksell back in a big-event playoffs, with B8 also joining them with a 3-2 record that encapsulates their inconsistency.

The PGL Bucharest playoff bracket is:

  • MIBR vs 3DMAX
  • Astralis vs Eyeballers
  • FUT vs B8
  • The MongolZ vs Parivision

No signs of progress for the vanquished BC.Game and FaZe

With the PGL Bucharest invites stretching so low into the ranking, the lowest-ranked teams didn’t have much expectation on their heads. That was not true for BC.Game and FaZe.

For BC.Game there were no excuses. The roster had to perform here after their recent results saw them miss the Major and effectively leave the Tier 1 invite bubble. Instead, it was more of the same disconnected CS with farcical performances at times.

They will now look to IEM Atlanta in May as a shot to gain some VRS, but it seems unlikely. Frankly, the BC.Game experiment seems totally doomed to fail, to the surprise of absolutely no one.

FaZe’s collapse has been much less expected after making the StarLadder Budapest Major Grand Final. The roster effectively started the event at 0-2 after forfeiting to attend HLC Pro Belgrade in their last effort to make the Cologne Major.

That failed; they also failed in their one match at this event after a truly awful loss to Inner Circle. The rebuild will already be under way in the FaZe organization. It is over.
