Mass Effect TV Show Could Be Written To ‘Appeal to Non-Gamers’

Mass Effect has been up in the air for several years. The launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda did little to instil confidence in the community, and the years-long wait we’re experiencing for whatever is coming next is not enjoyable. The fans sitting there, hungry, are also eagerly awaiting something to emerge from the TV show that has been talked about for more than a decade.

Well, in a recent report from The Ankler, that ‘something’ surfaced. The Head of Global TV at Amazon MGM, Peter Friedlander, offered up a tidbit about the Mass Effect TV show, but it’s not all good news.

Commander Shepard Isn’t in the Mass Effect TV Show

The concept of the live-action adaptation is one that has swollen in popularity in recent years, making for some stellar, award-winning projects. The likes of The Last of Us and Fallout have broken records and enjoyed monumental moments in the spotlight, and both are yet to deliver everything they have to offer.

However, both approached expertly tackled something that crops up when making a live-action adaptation of a video game. They were delivered in a way that makes them perfectly digestible by non-gamers unfamiliar with the source content.

The Last of Us, for instance, had an opening segment that perfectly explained the origin and potential of the Cordyceps annihilation that wiped out most of humanity. This wasn’t in the game, which dropped in 2013.

Now, Amazon MGM’s Head of Global TV, Peter Friedlander, has gone on record talking to The Ankler about the Mass Effect TV show, which has been floating around in one form or another for more than a decade.

In the interview, Friedlander explained he’s soaking up scripts and trying to determine the future of Mass Effect on the Prime platform, but it’s looking like it, too, will be written in a way that holds non-gamers in mind. This will ensure it remains as accessible as possible, which is important when you’re dealing with a universe as grand and multi-faceted as Mass Effect.

Thanks to IGN for spotting the interview.

There’s a lot of history and lore there.

Last year, Mass Effect’s spearhead, Mike Gamble, explained that the television show will not be a rehash of the original story, nor would it feature Commander Shepard. Instead, it’ll be an original story set after the trilogy that started in 2007.
