Bethesda has finally revealed all the new features and changes coming to Starfield with the Free Lanes update.
Starfield developers, Bethesda, came in guns blazing earlier this month, finally unveiling the Terran Armada DLC, announcing the Free Lanes update, and providing players with a much-awaited PS5 release date. Now, just a week away from its release, the devs are providing more information about the Free Lanes update.
Starfield Free Lanes Update Introduces Cruise Mode, X-Tech, Inventory Management Improvements, And More
Cruise Mode
Bethesda explains that Starfield’s Free Lanes update is designed for interplanetary exploration, and with that, the first addition to the game is Cruise Mode. In Cruise Mode, your speed can increase to light-years, making it easier to fly between planets. The new mode lets players move freely around their ship while traveling, allowing them to do the same things they normally would. There’s also a new, unique encounter called Interdiction, which can interrupt Cruise Mode.
X-Tech
Next up is X-Tech, a new resource for customizing and upgrading the player’s weapons, gear, and ship. It allows players to re-roll legendary effects, and the Free Lanes update adds a new legendary rank for weapons, helmets, packs, and suits. The new effects include Saboteur, Reckless, and Enigmatic. Players can also use X-tech through the Ship Optimization Terminal to upgrade different systems like shield strength, weapons, engines, grav drive, and more
Improved Resource Management
Regarding improved resource management in the Starfield Free Lanes update, players can now install an outpost container at each outpost for easier access to resources. The new Database system pulls in everything the players have learned, including locations, recipes, resources, ingredients, and more. Lastly, you can become an alien pet owner with the Milliewhale outpost pet. The new character can perform tricks, can be customized, and more. Players need to unlock him by completing the Housesitting” quest in Anchorpoint.
New Starborn Abilities and Quantum Entanglement Device
Furthermore, players will receive new ways to upgrade their Starborn Abilities through Quantum Essence, without having to start a New Game+ and find temples. The Quantum Entanglement Device also uses Quantum Essence for players to bring their favorite inventory items to their new playthrough.
New Anchorpoint POI, Ship Modules, Vehicles, Side Quests, Much More
That’s not all, the latest blog post on the Starfield Free Lanes update details several new additions, including the Anchorpoint POI, other planetary POI, an Asteroid Base Home, and much more that players can learn about below:
- Anchorpoint Station: Anchorpoint is a new star station with vendors and quests
- New Ship Modules: New ship modules have been added to upgrade different ship specs and even add some unique new abilities to your ship, like a new stealth module that cloaks your ship while boosting. These modules will drop-in ship combat as schematics and can be installed by any ship services technician.
- Upgrade Module Slot: You’ll notice as you’re customizing your gear that there’s a new Upgrade Module slot. This slot lets you upgrade a specific stat, like range, rate of fire, etc., on your gear.
- Colony War Action Heroes: There are 27 Colony War Action Hero collectibles for you to track down. Each one gives a stat buff (with different buffs for opened and unopened versions) and will look great decorating your outpost in the new outpost display cases.
- Many more planetary POIs: You’ll notice an increased variety in the types of planetary POIs as you explore.
- New Elite Crew: Fan-favorite NPC Muria Siarkiewicz can now be added as an Elite Crewmember. Find her at her normal spot near Galbank in New Atlantis.
- New side quests: There are several people on Anchorpoint who could use your help. Talk to everyone.
- New land vehicle: Bounce your way across the surface in style with the new Moon Jumper land vehicle. With its impressive boost capabilities, the Moon Jumper is built for verticality, allowing you to reach high-up places much more easily while in a vehicle.
- Asteroid base home: For those with a lot of credits to burn, you can now purchase a very ritzy asteroid base to call home. Explore Anchorpoint to learn how to purchase it.
- New enemy modifiers: Add some extra challenge to combat with new enemy modifiers like Tank (3x more health), Tricky (chance to avoid damage), Martyr (dying puts nearby allies into a rage), and more. These modifiers can be tuned in the Gameplay Options menu. All new modifiers will be identified with new icons near enemy health bars, and full descriptions can be found in scanner mode.
- New weapon skins: New Constellation and Neon skins for select weapons
- Photomode poses with the REV-8
- New camera features: A toggle to always play a landing camera has been added to Accessibility settings. Additionally, a more distant ship POV level has also been added to camera options.
