All Pokémon Legends: Z-A Starters, Explained—Which Pokémon Can You Choose?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the sequel to Legends: Arceus and features three fun starters to get you going. While the game doesn’t feature any new Pokémon, you might be pleasantly surprised by the first starter Mon in Z-A.

It doesn’t matter how many generations pass by; we’ll never forget the heartwrenching decision of having to pick between Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Every gen has brought about the same dilemma. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you also have three different starters to choose from.

It’s a bit different this time around, though, so let’s explain.

Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile are the three starters you must decide between in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Presumably, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will explain the reasoning behind the initial selections. You’d think it would be a Pokémon from different generations for each type. This is not the case as Pokémon Legends: Z-A gives us two from Gen 2 (Chikorita and Totodile) and Tepig from Gen 5.

Chikorita is number #151 in the Pokedex and the first official creature in the Johto region. Totodile is a few numbers along at #158, whereas Tepig is number #498!

Maybe the series will be ambitious and properly break free from the fire, water, and grass mold one day. For now, we’re happy to see three familiar faces, and now the onus is on you to choose your favorite friend to train and travel with.

Can You Choose All 3 Starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

From what we’ve seen, it looks like you’ll need to choose which starter to begin with, but you should be able to end up with all three by trading or catching them.

There’s never been a Pokémon game yet where you can’t complete the Pokédex. So, if you choose Totodile, it’s more than likely you’re not locked out of the other two. You might need to wait for a later section of the game, or unlock a special mechanic allowing you to acquire the remaining two Mon.

If you make a mistake or decide you want a different starter, you can always just start a fresh save file in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Now it brings us to the ultimate question: Which Pokémon will get your Legends: Z-A adventure underway? Do you have a certain love for Gen 2? Or is Tepig too cute to pass up? You should all drop a comment below, so we can see who you go for. Plus, head to the Insider Gaming forum for more Pokémon conversations!
