The term ‘AI’ is becoming more controversial by the day. Whatever your feelings on AI in game development, a new report suggests that 51% of game companies in Japan are developing games featuring some use of AI.
AI (artificial intelligence) is becoming more accepted by society with every passing second. The first major mainstream breakthrough arrived with ChatGPT. People understood its potential, and its use is appearing frequently across all walks of life—more so in gaming.
Many Japanese Game Companies Use AI

According to Nikkei (through Eurogamer and other sources): “51% of companies are using artificial intelligence (AI) or generative AI when developing games.”
Nikkei’s claim stemmed from a September 25 report from The Computer Entertainment Association (organizer of the Tokyo Game Show).
The bulk of AI usage goes into the “Production of videos and images, such as characters, and its use in generating stories and sentences and programming support is also prominent. 32% of companies are using AI to develop their own game engines (core software).”
Eurogamer says the findings are from 54 Japanese game companies, including many industry favourites: “Capcom, Konami, FromSoftware, Square Enix, and Sega, as well as smaller indie studios.”
If you’re not a fan of AI, then the future of the games industry might not be for you. It’s faster, easier, and cheaper for companies to develop games using AI, and the opposition isn’t strong enough to reverse this process. It’s going to keep happening.
