Former Square Enix Boss Calls Roblox Grow a Garden ‘Somewhat Evil’

Former Square Enix CEO recently shared his thoughts on the popular Roblox game, Grow a Garden, describing it as ‘somewhat evil.’

Roblox Grow a Garden is one of the largest games available today, surpassing concurrent records held by all games on Steam. Towards the end of last month, Grow a Garden reached a peak of a whopping 21.3 million players, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. We have now received some comments from the former Square Enix boss regarding the game.

As spotted by GamesRadar+, former Square Enix boss Jacob Novak recently appeared for an interview on The Game Business channel. During the interview, they touched a lot of topics, including the ex-Square Enix boss’ views on the viral Roblox title, Grow a Garden. As mentioned earlier, Novak has described the game as “somewhat evil”, and he had some points to share on why he thinks so.

Novak first discusses how, in games like Roblox, you can set a price point. However, the ‘evil’ part is relevant to how the monetisation has been implemented. The ex-Square Enix boss stated that he played Grow a Garden for ‘several hours’, and during that time, there were several times he was asked to pay to make his progress faster, including helping with growing certain plants and also stealing from other players.

The former Square Enix head explained that this type of monetisation is “very similar to how mobile games work”. Novak adds that it is very close to pushing it towards the edge, “and the edge is not very dissimilar from gambling”.
