Following the Conclusion of The Last of Us Season 2, co-creator and writer Neil Druckmann announced that he wouldn’t be returning for the third season.
The Last of Us Part 2 saw a resurgence in sales thanks to season 2 of HBO’s television adaptation. That being said, the show itself wasn’t as popular with fans. It was revealed that The Last of Us ‘season two finale suffered a 55% drop in viewership, accounting for a gap of more than 4.5 million viewers.
Despite the dip in popularity, HBO renewed the show for Season 3, and Druckmann confirmed that it will be told from Abby’s perspective, with Kaitlyn Dever taking center stage, reprising her role. However, it won’t be Druckmann leading the show production.
Neil Druckmann Leaves The Last of Us HBO Show

Druckmann announced, “I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on Season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time to transition my complete focus to Naught Dog and it’s future projects, incuding writing and directing our next game, Intergalatic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.”
Alongside Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, there is reportedly also a “secret game” in development. In May, Druckmann revealed, “There is another game at Naughty Dog being worked on, and I am more of a producer role and get to mentor and watch this other team, give feedback, and be like the executive in the room.”
It’s unclear if this game is one of the reasons for Druckmann leaving the show. What do you think of this decision? Let us know on the Insider Gaming Forums.
