It’s the confirmation for something we all assumed anyway – The Last of Us season three (on HBO) will be shot from Abby’s perspective. The second season unfolded in Seattle with Bella Ramsay’s Ellie taking centre-stage, but the third season will star Kaitlyn Dever as the woefully misunderstood antagonist, Abby.
This tracks with how 2020’s The Last of Us Part II unfolds, with the latter half of the game being shown from Abby’s perspective as she attempts to survive against all odds in Seattle and the surrounding area.
‘Spoiler Alert’
In a segment with The Hollywood Reporter, Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us, revealed:
I think it was good to go on that journey to end up at HBO, end up at a place that leaned into those controversial decisions, I guess.
But the decisions are just what the story required, and even now, it’s like I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way. Meaning like we just ended season two, and season three is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.
I was sure that they wouldn’t let us do this when we started adapting this, but they’ve leaned into what makes, I believe, the story special. And allowed us not only the time but the creative freedom to be able to take these swings, and I think the audience really appreciates that.
By ‘the decisions’, Druckmann was referring to some of the more impactful choices that the showrunners have made to impact the cadence of the story. The second season of the show didn’t deviate too much from the game, but there was enough original meat on the bones to allow the writers to flex a little creative license.
The Last of Us season two drew some blowback from the community after certain scenes aired, though. It suffered from a review bombing run after a controversial episode was broadcast, and it was later revealed that, compared to the first season, a 55% drop in viewership was recorded for the season finale.
