In a recent interview, one of The Last of Us’s showrunners said they hope to finish the story with a ‘fourth’ season.
The Last of Us HBO Series Will Need 4 Seasons
While speaking to Collider, Craig Mazin, the showrunner of The Last of Us HBO series, repeatedly discussed a ‘fourth’ season. When Mazin was asked how Season 2 would affect Season 3, he stated that they “always think ahead” and that the team has “thought ahead to Season 3 and Season 4” as they don’t want to miss out on any opportunities.
Later, Mazin added that “Season 3 will be longer than Season 2,” as there are more narrative opportunities in the next season. He explained that Joel’s death was “so impactful” that it was very difficult for them to steer away from it. Mazin called it a “narrative nuclear bomb,” which didn’t really allow them to pursue side stories like the Bill and Frank episode from the first season.
Mazin thinks that Season 3 of The Last of Us should provide them with “a little more room” to branch out. However, he is certain that “there is no way to complete this narrative in a third season.” He hopes that the Last of Us HBO team is able to “come back and finish it in a fourth,” which is the “most likely outcome.”
