Hot off the heels of yet another re-release of The Last of Us (the Complete Edition), it has been revealed that HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us might need to be extended by an entire season to cover the events of 2020’s Part II title. This is great news for fans of the stellar live-action series, especially considering we might never see another Last of Us game.
This week’s episode of The Last of Us featured a special throwback sequence that offered a never-before-seen glimpse into the past of Joel and Tommy Miller, the brothers cast head-over-heels into the apocalypse in the game’s universe.
It could be the only prequel content fans ever see featuring Joel and Tommy.
Take Us Back
Fans have been clamouring for a game that explores Joel and Tommy’s backgrounds for the longest time. From their escapades with the Fireflies to Joel’s time as a mercenary and a smuggler, and from Tommy’s work building up Jackson to Joel building a relationship with Tess, there is a wealth of content ripe for exploration.
Naughty Dog is unlikely to ever dive into these topics, though.
It was recently revealed that, alongside Intergalactic, Naughty Dog is working on a ‘secret game’, but nobody thinks it could be another Last of Us game, thanks to Neil Druckmann’s comments on the series.
That means that a segment in the most recent episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, ‘The Price’, could be the only prequel content we’ll ever see featuring Joel and Tommy.
Minor spoilers ahead.
In The Price, we got a look at the Miller brothers as teenagers, and we were treated to an emotional few moments with Joel and Tommy’s father, Javier Miller (played by Tony Dalton). It was revealed that the pair suffered from a rocky upbringing that saw them meet the iron fist of their cop father more times than you’d like – but that was only because he faced the wrath of his own father when he was a teenager.
It’s a cyclical thing that is woven into the episode quite nicely, showing how determined Joel was to break that loop of fathers laying hands on their children.
It’s not even close to what fans have been asking for as a prequel, but it could be the only thing they ever see from ‘young’ Joel and Tommy.
