New findings suggest that Microsoft may be developing a Chinese version of Xbox Game Pass.
Since the arrival of the new CEO, Asha Sharma, Xbox Game Pass has seen several changes, including lower prices, a new Starter tier, and more. Now, it seems the console maker could be working to extend these services for players in China; however, this hasn’t been officially confirmed by the company.
Xbox PC App Update Hints At Game Pass for China
According to a report by The Verge, the Xbox PC app’s latest update points towards Xbox Game Pass coming to China. Within the files, a mention of ‘Project Saluki’ has been found, and the description for this codename states, “China market expansion for Game Pass, Rewards, and subscription tiers.” Other than that, no other details were revealed.
The report adds that Microsoft has been selling consoles in China for years and selling games through Activision Blizzard. However, many games are not always approved by regulators, which is a problem publishers often face when trying to distribute their games in the region.
The same challenge applies to Xbox Game Pass, as not all games offered through the service may be approved in China. However, they could opt for a smaller library of games, with a new tier specifically catered to China. At the moment, this is just speculation.
Xbox PC App Update Also Mentions Codename Positron
Along with Project Saluki, the Xbox PC App update also mentioned ‘Positron,’ which is speculated to “enable Disc2Digital.” Currently, this is just speculation, but players think that through Positron, Xbox could introduce digital licenses through disc games. This is something the company had planned to do before, but decided to back away from it due to backlash from publishers and resellers.
