The laid-off workers from Ubisoft’s Halifax branch have voted in favor of a settlement with the company.
In January, it was reported that the CWA Canada union, representing 61 of the 71 employees who lost their jobs when Ubisoft Halifax was shut down, had filed a legal complaint. The studio closed days after the announcement that 61 of its employees had joined the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada, Local 30111.
CWA Canada Secures Deal for Ubisoft Halifax Workers
In a new announcement, the union revealed that its members voted overwhelmingly in favor of the settlement with Ubisoft.
The union negotiated the deal for its members. There is also a statement from a former Ubisoft employee expressing gratitude to the union for negotiating the package for the impacted staffers. There’s also a statement from the union’s president.
“The success of the negotiation was directly attributable to the solidarity our members showed, their resolve in holding Ubisoft to account, the collecting and sharing of information, and remaining steadfast in advocating for their rights as unionized workers,” CWA Canada President Carmel Smyth said. “Our union is very proud to have provided these workers with the help of our staff and lawyers to work through this difficult time.”
The CWA Canada President also noted that Ubisoft respected the union and acted professionally, but that negotiations weren’t easy.
