The Witcher 4 Gameplay Revealed at State of Unreal Tech Demo

CD Projekt Red featured a tech demo for The Witcher 4 today at the State of Unreal event, showcasing the world, Ciri and Kelpie gameplay and more.

The tech demo for The Witcher 4 begins with players exploring the Kovir region while playing as Ciri. It was recorded on a standard PS5, at 60fps, with ray-tracing enabled. In this demo, we are introduced to Ciri’s loyal companion, Kelpie. Players will spend significant time alongside Kelpie in the upcoming game. To enhance the gameplay experience, the developers have implemented multi-character motion matching using Unreal Engine.

This feature allows Kelpie and Ciri to be entirely in sync when mounting from any angle or speed. The developers have also added realistic muscles and movement under Kelpie’s skin when she’s galloping.

Coming to The Witcher 4’s world, Unreal Engine 5.6 introduced Nanite Foliage, which provides dense foliage while being memory efficient and rendering faster. Designers can also take a ‘nanite approach’ to foliage, allowing them to model every leaf and pine needle. This helps with the setting, as Kovir features many natural environments, forests and wild nature in the region. There’s also a new adaptive voxel representation in Nanite.

We return to Ciri as she explores a port town on foot. The town is bustling with various NPCs, including guards, fishermen, civilians, and other residents going about their daily lives. Players will observe these NPCs interacting with one another throughout the open world. The environment is highly responsive to player actions; for example, we see a man drop his crate of apples after accidentally colliding with Ciri while walking.

In other news, CD Projekt Red has hired more developers to work on The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2. What are your thoughts on The Witcher 4’s tech demo at State of Unreal? Let us know below and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
