The Order: 1886, a PlayStation 4 exclusive released in 2015, was supposed to be the start of a trilogy of games. This according to Ru Weerasuriya, co-founder of developer Ready at Dawn and creative director on The Order: 1886.
In an interview with Julien Chieze—the interview is in French—Weerasuriya says that there were two more games planned in the franchise: The Order: 1891 and The Order: 1899.
The sequel, he says, was in the early stages of development at the time it was cancelled. As far as what the second game in the series would’ve been, Weerasuriya said it would’ve included multiplayer and larger fights that included “dozens and dozens” of enemies. Regarding the multiplayer aspect, Weerasuriya said it was in development for the first game, but was pulled from the game because of a lack of budget and to keep working on it. So, the decision was made to push it to the second game which didn’t end of happening.
Even the story for the third game had been planned out should it have made it that far.
After The Order: 1886, Ready at Dawn developed one more traditional console game called Deformers and released it in 2017. From there, the became a VR game studio, releasing four games for the Oculus Rift headset. In 2020, they were purchased by Oculus Studios to continue developing VR titles. However, they only released one game after that purchase, Lone Echo II in 2021.
In 2023, the studio was hit with layoffs that saw a third of the company let go. Then, in 2024, Ready at Dawn was closed for good.
