Hideo Kojima has confirmed that a Death Stranding anime is in development.
Death Stranding Anime is Already in the Works
Spotted by VGC, Hideo Kojima mentioned the Death Stranding anime during an interview with Vogue Japan. Kojima first spoke about the live-action adaptation of Death Stranding with A24, stating that he wants to “pursue expression as a film” (translated by Google).
He wants to adapt the IP “in a way that can only be done as a film,” which will win awards at events like the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. While discussing the live-action Death Stranding film, the director confirmed that the team is “also working on an anime adaptation.” That is all the information we received about the Death Stranding anime from Kojima; there are no details on when it will release.
Kojima also discusses how the line between movies and games will soon disappear, and that’s what he is aiming for, too. He then spoke about the phases that the Death Stranding IP could go through. The first step was to create the IP, “deploy it on various devices”, and produce movies and sequels. The second phase is “to create works in which the boundary between games and movies is as ambiguous as possible”.
The game director explains that he wants people watching the game from behind the screen to “mistake it for a movie” by using the same creators and assets in both works. The third phase is for them to create a new medium that is “both a game and a movie.” The fourth phase is either making something entirely new or “creating an IP in a movie and turning it into a game.”
In other news, Hideo Kojima will appear on stage at the Summer Game Fest showcase. Also, the developer’s Physint is not expected to arrive until 2030. What are your thoughts on a Death Stranding anime? Let us know below, and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
