The Legend of Zelda Movie Releasing Sooner Than Expected

Shigeru Miyamoto has announced that the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie will be released one week earlier than expected. The movie was originally expected to be released on May 7, 2027. It is now scheduled to be released on April 30 of next year. It was first slated for release in March of 2027 before the announcement of the May date.

The announcement came from the creator of the Zelda franchise on Nintendo’s Twitter accounts. No specific reason for the change in release date has been shared at this time.

“This is Miyamoto. We have decided to change the worldwide theatrical release date of the live-action film “The Legend of Zelda” from May 7, 2027, to April 30, 2027. In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production. It’s less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer,” he wrote.

More on the Upcoming Legend of Zelda Movie

In April 2026, it was announced that filming on the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie had finished, and the team was transitioning into post-production. Wes Ball, the movie’s director, made the announcement during CinemaCon 2026. The adaptation is slated to star Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, with Bo Bragason as Zelda. Many details about the film are currently under wraps. And all that has been seen as a few set photos. One thing that is known, however, is that BAFTA Award winner John Paesano will serve as the film’s composer.

Another detail shared with the public is where the movie will be streaming after its theatrical release. Netflix has secured exclusive streaming rights to Sony’s live-action Legend of Zelda movie following its run in movie theaters. Learn more about that here.

Many of the classic Nintendo franchises have been making the move to the big screen. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was king of the box office following its release. That movie also served as the platform to reintroduce Star Fox to the mainstream public. Now, the Star Fox cast is returning to the video game world with a new game on the Nintendo Switch 2. Learn more about that here.

Insider Gaming will continue to monitor the story and report any updates as more information becomes available.
