February’s launch of Civilization 7 was one of the most highly-anticipated releases in the franchise’s 34-year history. The game was introducing brand new mechanics in the form of a new age structure, new civilizations, and plenty of other features. However, the game launched with mixed reviews from players for a myriad of reasons. It’s something that Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick understands but hasn’t been too concerned about.
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick admitted that while the game “had some challenges” when it released, it’s nothing new for the franchise. According to Zelnick, it’s something that seems to happen with every new release in the series.
“Every time we’ve come out with a new platform iteration of Civilization, there’s been some consternation on the part of consumers who love the franchise and are beholden to its prior iteration,” Zelnick said. “Then, we will occasionally do updates, make changes, address concerns, and the sales cycle ends up being very long, and people – once again – fall in love with it.”
Zelnick continued: “I see that happening right now. We’ve addressed some of the initial changes, we probably have a bit more work to do, but sales are strong and we’re really happy with how it’s going – and I think in the fullness of time, it’ll be just great.”
Since it’s release on February 11, Civilization 7 has seen numerous updates including changes to the game’s population growth system, multiplayer, new natural wonders, and Holy City conversion, among other changes. In addition to what’s been released, the developers are working on updates that include auto explore, new map types, Steam workshop support, and more. Details on future updates will released at later dates.
