Continuing on from 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Miles Morale, which served as a PS5 launch title, Spider-Man 2 brings both web-swinging heroes together as they look to take down Venom and the mercenary group called the Hunters. So far, Spider-Man 2 has been a great success with Sony claiming the game sold 2.5 million copies within its first 24 hours of release.
While speaking on the Friends Per Second podcast, Spider-Man 2’s creative director Bryan Intihar gave some subtle hints at the future of Insomniac’s smash-hit series and that a third game could be in the works, likening it to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
“If Spider-Man 1 was like our Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2 was like a Civil War… where logically do we go from there?”
For those who don’t keep up with the MCU, the beloved Infinity Saga was split into three phases between 2008 and 2019. It began with Iron Man and then spent the next few years establishing other franchises and characters such as Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. Things began ramping up with Captain America: Civil War at the beginning of phase three, and concluded with Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in history, selling over 2.5 million copies within its first 24 hours, it’s hard not to see that Sony, and Insomniac, will probably want to do a third title.
Without any spoilers, the ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 story also hints at a third game potentially being on the horizon, too.
For Marvel fans without a PlayStation 5, there could be a while to wait before they get their hands on the PC port of Spider-Man 2, as Miles Morales wasn’t released on the platform for two years after the PlayStation release.
But, fans of Insomniac’s Marvel games won’t have long to wait until they can jump into the next adventure, with Insomniac currently developing Wolverine, which is scheduled to release in 2024. A stand-alone game focused on Venom was also teased by Senior Narrative Director Jon Paquette recently, too!
