It was recently discovered that a Dutch consumer group had filed a massive lawsuit against Sony that aligns perfectly with the tech titan’s recent decision to scrap the physical production of new PlayStation games from January 2028. No more discs will be printed for games released after January 2028, a revelation that threw the gaming industry into disarray.
The group, Stichting Massaschade & Consument, claims to have filed the lawsuit on behalf of a whopping 1.7 million Dutch PlayStation users, and it’s seeking $457 million in damages for exorbitant prices in the PlayStation Store. This wouldn’t be the first time such a suit has succeeded against Sony, if it were to go all the way.
Sony Lawsuit is the Latest in the No-Disc Saga
A couple of weeks ago, Sony stood up and announced it would no longer be printing discs for new PlayStation games launched after January 2028, prompting many to lose their minds. In social circles everywhere, folks denounced PlayStation, canceled their subscriptions, and even fed their PlayStation 5 consoles into crushing machines.
Now, a consumer group in the Netherlands has filed a staggering lawsuit against Sony, stating that the company’s store commission could push prices higher than ever before, leaning into the topic of monopolization yet again.
The lawsuit, which Stichting Massaschade & Consument invites all comers to join, states clearly:
You are paying too much for PlayStation games.
It’s worth pointing out that the lawsuit was kicked off in earnest last year, when Stichting Massaschade & Consument formally summoned Sony to appear at court in the Netherlands. This drew comment from Sony, and it has been a developing situation ever since.
But the recent news from Sony regarding physical games has only exacerbated the situation and further cemented this lawsuit’s position. With physical games being scrapped, Sony has effectively demanded that most people turn exclusively to the PlayStation Store for new games, which feeds perfectly into the exact scenario this lawsuit seeks to abolish.
If you happen to be from the Netherlands, you can learn how to enter this class action lawsuit and seek compensation here.

This will go no where. People doing this should be made fun of.
I bought all these games from gamestop for nothing
Absolute nonsense of a lawsuit, will get thrown out. You can’t claim damages for something that might happen, and PS doesn’t have a monopoly by any stretch of the imagination. PS store prices are comparable to other platforms, this isn’t Nintendo we’re talking about here. Just play on PC.
The problem with this lawsuit stating: “You are paying too much for PlayStation games.” is that they’ll have to do the math on how much it takes to actually make games and find out they actually need to cost like $100-$200 to support a 3-5 year dev cycle for a 300 person team lol
