Sonic Creator Issues Sonic Racing Crossworlds Dig At Mario Kart World

The Sonic racing series is gearing up for a new entry later this year with the arrival of Sonic Racing Crossworlds, and Sonic’s creator, Takashi Iizuka, couldn’t resist a dig at Mario Kart World during Summer Game Fest.

Releasing September 25, Sonic Racing Crossworlds took to the stage during the presentation to showcase a new look at the title, along with reveals of some huge collabs coming to the game.

The likes of Hatsune Miku, Joker from the Persona series, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza series, and even characters from Minecraft are joining the stacked roster, which of course also includes Sonic and friends.

Iizuka wasn’t content with showing off Sonic Racing Crossworlds, though, as he also took a cheeky shot at Mario Kart World with the announcement of online cross-platform matchmaking, which is “unlike another kart-racing game.”

Mario Kart World, which released worldwide alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 console on June 5, does, of course, not offer such cross-platform functionality, with the title strictly a Switch 2 exclusive.

Although that’s nothing new for the franchise, and shouldn’t come as a surprise, there are some strange omissions from Mario Kart World, including an inability to enjoy the new Free Roam mode in split-screen.

The classic lapped format of races has also been replaced in some circumstances by intermissions, long stretches of often-barren landscapes between venues, forcing players to improvise.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds releases on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch family of consoles, with a pass to upgrade the Switch version to the Switch 2 edition in the works.

What did you make of the latest look at Sonic Racing Crossworlds? Is cross-platform multiplayer enough to sway you away from Mario Kart World? Share your thoughts in the Insider Gaming forum.
