During RuneFest 2026, Jagex took to the stage to unveil RuneScape 4, an all-new MMO set in the fabled universe. It’s the first RuneScape project that’ll be built in Unreal Engine, but it has been dubbed a ‘typical Jagex game’. It was revealed that the game started life as an expansion for Dragonwilds, but they quickly realized it was ambitious enough to become a standalone game.
The team even published a brand-new teaser trailer for RuneScape 4, which might be packed with CGI material, but looks utterly impressive and deeply exciting. MMO fans will want to pay close attention to this one.
RuneScape’s Next Generation is Coming
At RuneFest, which is set to wrap up tomorrow, Jagex unveiled the future of RuneScape in a few ways, including revealing what’s coming next for OSRS, the base game, and Dragonwilds.
But the team also announced that RuneScape 4, the first RuneScape game built in Unreal Engine, is officially in development. They even shared a new teaser trailer:
Speaking at RuneFest, Jagex’s Jesse America, executive producer of Dragonwilds, explained that RuneScape 4 is coming alive from the creation of a simple expansion that underwent a major pivot:
The team embraced that challenge with a lot of creative ambition and enthusiasm. When we saw the very first prototypes and read the designs that they’d brought together, we realized that the game direction of all of this pointed at a completely different scope. We came to the realization that it essentially would be an MMO, and that it deserved its own game.
RuneScape 4 will seemingly focus on dragons and large-scale exploration and adventuring opportunities. It’s very early days for the new game, which will undoubtedly receive much more attention as it develops into a fuller product going forward.
