Naoki Hamaguchi discusses his affinity for physical media and his efforts to ensure that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final game in the remake trilogy, would have a physical release. This comes amid a growing debate over the future of physical media, fueled by decisions such as Sony’s plan to end physical game disc production in 2028.
The Final Fantasy 7 director says he understands when people say “no disc, no purchase,” and he also weighed in on the compromises it took to get the upcoming game onto a disc.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Understands ‘No Disc, No Purchase’

Speaking to the Radio Times in a new interview, Square Enix‘s Naoki Hamaguchi said he believed there could be a future where all physical media is essentially a code in a box rather than data on a disc, and he understands the concerns around that compromise as well. Now, he wants to send a message to those who aren’t pleased with the compromise, including making sure they understand these decisions aren’t his to make.
“In this day and age, as we’ve been talking about, there’s a lot of pressure for disc-less editions, digital editions, and I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible,” he explained before saying that he understands there are those out there who may not agree with the final decision.
“I completely understand there are those out there who may not really agree with that direction or approve of that direction. But I would just say that I hope you understand that I completely see where you’re coming from, and that I did my best.”
As for what’s next for Hamaguchi, he recently confirmed that his studio is developing Kingdom Hearts 4.
