Rockstar Games Co-Founder Feels Players Should Still Have Physical Game Options

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser believes companies should continue providing physical media as long as consumers want it.

Ever since Sony announced it would end physical disc production for games in 2028, the topic of physical media versus an all-digital landscape has picked up steam. One side of the argument cites consumer trends and the general popularity of digital purchases as a reason to move away from physical media.

On the flip side, there are concerns that safeguards are not in place to ensure consumers actually own what they purchase digitally, rather than being told they’re only purchasing a license that can be revoked at any time.

During an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Dan Houser was asked to give his thoughts on the physical media debate. He stated that he loves physical media personally, but isn’t sure he cares heavily about the shift to digital. Still, he believes companies should continue to accommodate players who do. However, he openly speaks about the benefits of digital releases, including the ability to provide updates to games consistently.

“I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it. But I don’t know that I personally care,” he began. I also think that the ability to update games, as critical as people are of digital releases, the ability to update and fix problems in games is really useful for the quality of games.
