Sony Already Repurposing ‘Disc Site’ After Scrapping Physical Games

It’s been revealed that Sony is repurposing their largest disc production site, with the intention of reassigning staff to produce Micro Optics instead.

Of course, this follows the breaking news that Sony plans to discontinue discs for new PlayStation games, with the movement beginning in January 2028. Even though it’s over a year away, it seems like Sony has wasted no time in reorganizing its production lines, as discs are already being put on the back burner.

Major Restructuring At Sony Plant In Thalgau

First reported by Austrian news site ORF.at, it’s been revealed that, following the discontinuation of physical discs for games from 2028, production of them will be rapidly slowing down. Sony would typically produce around 600,000 discs every day at the site, but that number is set to drastically decrease.

According to Sony DADC CEO Dietmar Tanzer, PlayStation currently accounts for around 50% of the site’s volume, though a reduction to roughly 10% is expected by 2028.

With that in mind, the 300 employees of the factory are set to be retrained, with Tanzer mentioning that they want to maintain the same level of staffing, regardless of the lower disc production. Instead, there’s reportedly been an investment of around €30 million towards new technology for producing Micro Optics.

It seems like Sony has wasted no time in moving towards a disc-less PlayStation future, and fans are certainly not happy about it. Many are cancelling their PS Plus subscriptions in a form of protest, whilst others are taking to social media to share their thoughts on the matter.

Speaking of sharing, remember when it was encouraged to share discs with friends? PlayStation even made a fun video about it, back in 2013. Check it out below:
