Rocket League has been a constant success, and millions of matches have been registered over a decade plus. Psyonix has pretty much kept the core gameplay the same, but a new teaser hints at the biggest gameplay change in 11 years.
Do you realise how solid and fun a live-service game has to be for the developer to not have to make many (if any) significant changes over a period of 10 years? Rocket League has nailed what it wants to be and what it needs to be for the community for over a decade.
Big changes are being teased for the sports/racer, and the game’s respawn mechanic might be getting an overhaul.
Rocket League Could be Adding Ability to Choose Respawn

In Rocket League, if you get demo’d—when an enemy player boosts into you at speed and blows you up—you respawn back at your goal. The major caveat is that you don’t get to decide which side of the goal you appear on.
This has drastic consequences for live gameplay. For example, you could spawn on the same side of the arena as the ball, making it easier to take possession, or you could spawn on the opposite side of the ball, which is dangerously near your goal, making it completely RNG if you can reach the ball in time and prevent a goal, etc.
Respawns have been a source of community frustration since the game launched in 2015, and it’s one of the few gripes I (and most RL fans) have with the game.
Psyonix gave everyone hope on May 22, with the release of a social media post titled: ‘The decision is in your control.’
The short clip showed a car getting demo’d and spawning on one side of the arena. The location leads to the opposition team scoring, but the footage quickly rewinds and shows a new UI prompt, indicating that you can now finally decide where to spawn!
With the announcement that Unreal Engine 6 will power the next era of Rocket League, new changes are being talked about. This would easily be one of the biggest and boldest updates Psyonix has ever made.
Check out the teaser below, as it might be time to get excited for Rocket League’s future.
